WHY YOU SHOULD READ TO YOUR KIDS

I picked up a copy of one of my favourite books to read today. I have read this book over and over again, it's just an amazing book. The writer said somewhere that his father loved to read and write and always encouraged his children to develop a reading habit. That's basically why and how he became a writer. He also said his dad had a little library that had books, maps and little works of art in it. Reading this part gets me really nostalgic each time.

My dad has a library very similar to the one the writer mentioned. He also loves to read,  so our library has loads of books which my siblings and I neatly arranged, each according to its genre. My dad also had a huge map of the world which he still has till date. Growing up, he used the map to teach us about the different continents and countries that make them up.  He would tell us about countries, their capitals, current and past leaders and a little about their history and culture.

Woe betide you the day you would probably be watching TV with Dad and a country is mentioned. For instance, Venezuela. He would ask a question about Venezuela, failure to answer correctly resulted to one or more hours of thoroughly studying the map whether you liked it or not. Yikes!!!

Way before we had a library, my mum made us fall in love with books and reading. She discovered a bookshop/library where one could register and borrow books, so she registered my siblings and I. Each of us would borrow, read and then rotate the books amongst ourselves. It was so much fun!

All these things my parents practised helped my siblings and I immensely. It helped develop our writing and reading skills. It also made us very versatile because we found out while conversing with friends that there was hardly any topic we could not contribute or engage in.

Owing to this, i have also introduced my kids to books because I wouldn't want them to miss out on the many benefits and rewards it has to offer. Reading stories to children from BIRTH is very important because it helps to develop their vocabulary, improves their communication, listening and visual skills.

It's funny though, because actually kids can't understand what they are being read to until they reach a certain age, some even play with and destroy the books but subconsciously the child develops a love for books and appreciates reading.

There are books suitable for children at all stages. Some teach numbers, colours, shapes and alphabets in a very exciting and enchanting way. There are picture books that teach them to identify objects, point and feel it. Rhyme books are available also, which sing rhymes when opened.

It's never too early to introduce books to your kids. The benefits are just endless. So what are you waiting for? Buy a book for your child today!
